What Is a Certificate of Inspection (COI)?
A Certificate of Inspection (COI) is a mandatory safety inspection required by Queensland's Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) for heavy vehicles, commercial transport vehicles and certain specialist vehicle types. It verifies your vehicle meets the minimum safety standards required to operate on Queensland roads.
Unlike a Roadworthy/Safety Certificate, which is a one-off requirement when selling or transferring a light vehicle: a COI must be renewed on a regular schedule (typically every 12 months) to keep your vehicle's registration active. Without a current COI, you cannot renew your vehicle's registration. This means your vehicle legally cannot operate on the road, which for many business owners translates directly to lost revenue and costly downtime.
